Free Sundae for Mom at Culver's

Got this in an email from Culvers:
On Sunday, May 9th, treat your Mom to a free 1 Scoop Sundae. Choose from a wide variety of fruit, candy and syrupy toppings, such as strawberries, raspberries, snickers, hot fudge, and butterscotch. Plus the first 100 Moms will receive a free carnation.
You can treat yourself if you're a mom too! :)

Make Your Own: Hamburger Helper

Does your family like Hamburger Helper? The adults at our house don't really care for it, but I keep a few boxes that were super cheap around as a backup quick meal since the kids do. Here is a link I found for a recipe to make your own. Still just 30 minutes. Still just one pot. Several variations are listed and you can even make the mixes up ahead of time so it really is just as easy as opening a box!

Kids Eat Free

I've added a "Kids Eat Free" search box in the left side bar. If you're planning on going out to dinner, pop in your zip code and see where you can get some free food! The search results change each day of the week. This is not an all inclusive list (restaurants have to pay to get featured). For more restaurants that offer deals check out the our kids eat free or cheap list here.

Heads Up... Print Now

There is a $3 off 2 Right Guard coupon here that will make them a money maker at CVS next week. Right Guard will be on sale for $2.99 get a $2 ECB back (limit 2).  If your new to coupons and feel bad for getting things for free... DON'T! As you can see the manufacturer issued a coupon to coincide with a sale on purpose. They know that people will end up getting their product for free.

Please consider buying a useful product like this even if you don't personally need it. There are so many places in our area that would gladly take toiletries as a donation. It's a win-win. You make $1 and someone in need is helped.

Copps Run 5/5

I made a quick run to Copps so I could use my free milk and egg coupons from two weeks ago. I didn't really need much but thought I'd try and get some free or more than free stuff as long as I was there. So what I ended up with was an odd assortment. I got:

1 Roundy's 12 pack soda $1.88 with Extreme Savings coupon
1 Roundy's 24 pack water $2.88 with Extreme Savings coupon
1 Mott's Apple Juice $.98 with Extreme Savings coupon
1 Barilla elbow mac $.48 with Extreme Savings coupon
2 Vitamin Water $1 each - $1 MC doubled = both FREE
1 Juicy Juice Sparkling $2.50 - $1 MC doubled = $.50
1 Extra gum 3 pk. $.98 with Extreme Savings coupon
1 Bar S franks $.58 with Extreme Savings coupon
1 Oscar Mayer turkey bacon $2.50 - free item MC = FREE
2.5 lbs. bananas $1.32
1 half gallon organic milk $2.99 - $3.25 free item MC = FREE plus overage
1 gallon milk $1.98 - $3.25 = FREE plus overage
1 dozen eggs $.89 - $1.75 free item MC = FREE plus overage
2 Kraft Meltdown cheese $1.66 each - 2 $1 MC doubled = FREE plus overage
2 Minute Maid Cherry Limeade (my favorite!!) $1 each
1 Activia 4 pk yogurt $2 - $1 MC doubled = FREE

FINAL TOTAL = $8.29
(Receipt says I saved $37.16 if you believe those numbers, which I don't)

I don't know why they allow the overage on those milk and egg coupons but I'm not complaining!! Who pays $1.75 for a dozen eggs anyway? The little old lady behind me was shocked when she saw my final total and the bagger told me to enjoy my "free" food! :)

Erica did awesome at Copps today too. You can see what she got here.

Coupon Policies

I recommend you print out the coupon policy of every store you shop at. Tuck these policies in your coupon container and if you ever have an uneducated cashier (or manager) you can show them their official store coupon policy. Of course, any cashier, manager, and/or store have the right to refuse to take a coupon; if that happens I suggest you contact their corporate office so they can help clarify the matter.

Target Official Coupon Policy
Walmart Official Coupon Policy
Menards Official Coupon Policy (scroll down almost to the bottom)
Festival Coupon Policy
Family Dollar Coupon Policy

CVS and Walgreens do not list their coupon policies online. I could not find an official copy of Piggly Wiggly's or Copp's either. The best way to get an "official" copy is to email them and then print out the entire email.

Birthday Greetings... and Savings!!

It's the beginning of May and that means my birthday is coming up! Why am I telling you this?  I'm sharing because when I checked my email this morning I had two $5 birthday savings "certificates" and I'm sure more will roll in as my birthday approaches.

I don't recommend signing up for loyalty clubs that you have to pay for (sorry Barnes & Noble) unless you truly do a TON of shopping at that particular store. But I highly recommend signing up for free ones at stores you may at least step foot in.

The savings certificates you receive from these stores basically act like a $5 gift card. You get $5 off but you only have to spend $5. Rarely can you find something for exactly $5 but you can usually get a couple pairs of socks or some other small item(s) for free or very close to it. Of course, they are hoping you'll buy the new $50 pair of shoes but you don't have to do that!

Some stores that I am aware of that send birthday greetings are DSW, Famous Footwear, and CVS (got a $3 ECB--only happened once though---they forgot me last year).

Of course, there are a ton of restaurants that will send you birthday goodies too! Some are a coupon good for your entire birthday month or week but many have to be claimed on your actual birthday. You definitely could eat all day for free on your birthday if you planned it right.

Here are few that sound good to me:

Red Robin--free burger on your birthday
Sonic Cruisers--varies, free drink or food
Noodles & Company - free entree
Culver's - free sundae

If those don't strike your fancy Freebies4Mom has a huge list of birthday freebies here (it is a national list though so not all will apply to us here). If you know of any others in the Green Bay area please leave a comment!

Lower Your Presciption Costs: BidRx

A few years ago, in an effort to save some money, my husband's employer signed our family up for BidRx. The premise is that you comparison shop for all sorts of items, but you are kind of at a disadvantage when it comes to shopping around for your prescriptions.

If you, or any member of your family, takes prescription medications on a regular basis it is worth a few minutes of your time to check out BidRx. They provide an "electronic marketplace" for you to instantly obtain discounts on prescriptions. It is basically a reverse Ebay. You tell them what medication you need and the pharmacies all try to earn your business by being the lowest bidder.

You see the bids from all the pharmacies and choose the pharmacy you prefer. The goal is that through the BidRx marketplace consumers get the best price. BidRx uses the power of the internet to create an open, competitive, and transparent marketplace for prescriptions.

You do have to register, but registration is free. To start a "bid", you input your prescription information and you will see several "instant" bids from various pharmacies. You can choose one of these to complete your deal immediately or you can wait a few days to see if any other pharmacy outbids any of the "instant" prices. If you accept a bid, you simply contact the pharmacy to arrange getting them the written prescription and payment.

Another way BidRx can save you money is when you put in your medication they will give you a list of other medications that are similar that could save you money (generics or different brands). They suggest you bring this list into your doctor to discuss the lowest cost, most beneficial medication. I have found that doctors often don't realize just how much prescriptions cost (plus it is different for everyone depending on insurance coverage).

BidRx works best for regular, continuing medications (not prescriptions you need on short notice). We have used this service multiple times and saved a bunch. Each time we have used BidRx the "winning" pharmacy happened to be a mail order pharmacy (Omro Pharmacy). We have been super satisfied with their service. It cost considerably less and the order shipped super fast.

BidRx is not insurance so you can use it in combination with your insurance to save money. Also you can just put in your prescription information to do a quick comparison without finalizing any transaction and there is never any obligation. If you don't have great insurance and the medication you take isn't on the discounted list for Target or Walmart, BidRx could definitely save you some money.

Stock Up Watch

Can you believe it's May already?! Seems like I just got used to writing 2010 and it's almost half way through the year. Just a quick heads up if this if your first deal seeking summer... stock up! When you see a great deal take advantage of it. I think deals become a little harder to find in the summer. Don't worry they reappear around Back-to-School time but I don't want you to end up paying for toothpaste because you didn't plan ahead a little bit! :)

If you shop deals now you should be able to stock up on enough ketchup, mustard, barbecue sauce, relish, baked beans, and other summer/picnic type foods to last you until next year at this time. I know that sounds like a lot but just think about how long a bottle ketchup lasts you, do the math (how many is a year's supply for your family?), and then stock up when it's on sale! Do that for each deal you come across and you'll soon find you are spending much less at the grocery store. Or better yet, you might find you don't have to go to the store for a week or two at all!

As you find deals on summer produce (strawberries, blueberries, peaches, corn, etc.) consider buying a little extra to freeze or preserve for those dreary winter months when you wish produce didn't cost a small fortune.

Gas prices tend to rise a bit in the summer as well and this year it will probably be worse (due to that recent spill). So perhaps by saving money in other areas of your budget, like groceries, you'll leave a little more wiggle room for gas in the months ahead.
