Clearance Deals at Wal-mart

Wal-mart in Lawrence (West DePere) is at it again. More shoes on clearance and lots of clothes too. Shoes for men, women, boys, and girls ranging from $5 to $15.

Lots of clothes clearanced for $3 as well. I got several nightshirts for myself, a 3 piece (1 t-shirt, 1 tank, 1 short) Handy Manny set, and a 3 piece (pants, light jacket, and t-shirt).

The clothes are in their respective areas and the shoes were in the middle aisle by the new shoe section on a huge rolling cart.

Clearance Sale at Once Upon A Child

If you haven't gone clothes shopping for your little ones at Once Upon A Child, you might want to stop by on Saturday, June 5th. They are having a blow-out sale on their clearance merchandise. Find out all about it at their website here.

Once Upon a Child is a resale store for children's clothing (newborns to big kids), shoes, toys and furniture. One the whole, they have very nice, mostly name brand clothing. You won't find stained, torn or out of date clothing at their store as you might in a thrift store or garage sale. However, the prices at Once Upon a Child are more expensive than thrift stores or garage sales.

They will also buy your "gently" used items. They are very picky in what they'll buy but their payments are generally fair.

I probably sell more to them, than I purchase at the store. However, the things I have purchased have been great! And the clearance sale makes them even better. Gotta love Gap and Hanna Anderson dresses for little girls for only a few bucks!

8 Phony Bargains

Ran across an article this morning about 8 "Phony" Bargains. I found it interesting. They list the following and then tell you a better way to save.

  1. Unlimited Long Distance--I agree, but they didn't mention my favorite solution to this problem... FREE long distance from Google Voice!
  2. Frequent-Flier Rewards Cards
  3. Checking Accounts That Pay Interest--this is one of the ones I don't necessarily agree with but you do have to "shop around". We have a checking account from Harbor Credit Union, that pays a great interest rate (much better than Associated). I am a firm believer in making your money work for you! You're working hard to save it, so make it work hard for you in interest. You can get $50 when open a "Go Green" checking account from Harbor Credit Union with a referral (email me for more info if you are interested).
  4. Overdraft Protection
  5. Extended-Warranty Protection
  6. Going-Out-of-Business Sales
  7. Paying for a Credit Report
  8. Fraud Alerts
Can you think of any other "deals" that aren't really bargains?

Free Hot Dogs at Festival

If you printed those $1/2 Bar-S hot dog coupons that I told you about last week then you can get some free hot dogs at Festival! (There was also a $1/2 in some of the RP inserts on 5/16)

GB Savers reader Laura says Bar-S hot dogs are on sale for $.99 and there is a coupon for $1/2 in the red coupon machine at the store. The red box coupons are store coupons so you can use these in conjunction with manufacturer's coupons to "double" your savings and get two packages of hot dogs free!

Even if you don't have the manufacturer's coupon you can still get two packages of hot dogs for $1!!

Thanks Laura for the heads up!

Saturday Video

This week in my stockpiling post I mentioned my favorite money saving book of all time: The Complete Tightwad Gazette. If you aren't familiar with Amy Dacyczyn she wrote a money saving newsletter in the 1990's. Long before blogs she was sending money saving tips the good old fashioned way... through the mail!

The Complete Tightwad Gazette book is an anthology of all her newsletters. Some parts are now outdated (computers weren't yet a household necessity) but it is definitely worth reading. The book is full of tips on saving money, but more than that it helps you to start thinking about the frugal way to do things. One of the big reasons we waste money is because we don't think, we just do things the way we always have (or the way our parents did).

Below is a fairly recent interview with Amy that I really enjoyed. If you only take two things away from the video it should be: Little things adds up and it's NEVER too late to start!

Have you ever read the Tightwad Gazette?

Heads Up... Kraft Rebate

Looks like several Kraft items will be on sale at Festival next week (look for my post on Sunday or Monday). It will be a good week to buy some items for the Kraft rebate that came with the sample packs! (Don't forget you can price match at Target or Wal-mart as well.)

The rebate is good for $10 back on $30 in Kraft purchases. Combined with sales and coupons this could get you some great deals. The rebate purchase dates are 5/23 through 6/13. Apparently you don't have to buy everything on one receipt which is nice and gives you the chance to shop around.

Kids Meal Deals

I mentioned the Kids Meal Deals widget in the sidebar last week, but wanted to let you know they also have free apps for iPhone and Blackberry. So if you need to look up a "kids eat free" restaurant while you're out and about you can!

I'm hoping as more businesses find out about this that we will see more of the local restaurants that offer these deals listed. This is a national site that lists over 14,000 kids eat free restaurants so keep that in mind if you are traveling this summer!

For more free fun kids stuff click on the "Kids" tab above.

Saving 101: Stockpiling

Stockpiling will save you lots of money. If you don't do it already... give it a try.

What is stockpiling?
A stockpile is basically just a large supply of the items you use most. Each shoppers stockpile will look a bit different. Sales are cyclical. If you pay attention and stock up when items are at their lowest price you can save a bunch of money, even if you never want to clip a coupon.

Stockpile What YOU Use Most
Only stock up on items you use when they are a great deal. This is where knowing your prices comes in. When my four "biggies" go on sale I really stock up and those are: peanut butter, cheese, boneless skinless chicken breasts, and ground beef.

For example, I only buy peanut butter when it is $1 or less. I buy a case or sometimes 2 to get us through until the next sale. So I spend $12 on peanut butter at once instead of buying each one individually for $2, saving myself $12 (maybe more) that I know I'm going to spend anyway. I only buy boneless, skinless chicken breasts when they are $1.66 per pound or less. Prices change so I keep running list of stock up prices.

Where Do You Put It All?
Just find a corner to pile your stuff and start watching the sales. Shelves are nice but not necessary. I remember reading in the Tightwad Gazette once...Would you rent out the space under your bed for $30 a month? Who wouldn't? Well, if you put food under there that you got a great deal on that is essentially what you are doing. Most of us here in WI are fortunate enough to have basements so maybe you won't even have to put a bunch of stuff under your bed!

If you don't have a stand alone freezer, you might want to save up for one (check Craigslist for a used one). Even if you only put meat you bought on sale in it, it would pay for itself in no time. Buying meat when it is on sale and freezing it can save you BIG! And, yes it is safe to freeze meat for several months.

I Don't Have Enough Money to Buy Extra Food Each Week
Think you don't have room in your budget to stockpile? Think again. The little bit you save this week can be used to save more next week....until you rarely pay full price for the things you use the most. If you already stockpile a little bit, branch out to other products to save even more. You could eventually get to the point where you don't need to buy anything but milk, produce, and the very best deals each week.

I've talked about this before but since this is a good time of year to buy certain sale items I thought it might be a good reminder. Keep an eye out for seasonal sales (ketchup, mustard, baked beans, and the like in the summer OR flour, butter, sugar, etc in the late fall). Buy enough to last you until the next year when the sale are good again. You'll love shopping in your basement and pulling items off your own shelf instead of adding them to your shopping list. Come this time next year if prices have gone up (and they will!) you be using items bought at this year's (lower) prices!

How Much Do You Need
You'll have to do that math on that one. One way to see how long something lasts you is to grab a Sharpie marker and write the date you open it on the lid. If it takes you a month to use it up you know a year's supply of that item would be 12. If you are watching sales and know that item goes on sale for rock bottom prices once every six months buy 6 each time it hits the lowest price. Some things have longer expiration dates than others so it won't hurt to store extra of those. [Keep in mind most (not all but many) "expiration" dates aren't really that, they are "best by" dates. It will not harm you to eat items after that date, especially on processed type foods.]

What About Things You Can't Stockpile
There are some things you just can't stockpile. [Lettuce?] Stockpile the items you are able to and this will leave room in your budget for things that just never go on sale. You can do other things to help lower the cost of those items, like eat in season and shop around (Aldi, Sam's Club, Badger Wholesale, etc).

Stay Organized
Now having a great supply if food isn't very helpful if you forget what you have! Keep like items together and shelves tidy. Use older items first so you don't end up with one can of corn from 2002 in the back corner of your cupboard because it just kept getting shoved to the back. (This rotating can organizer is a great help!) A freezer list of some type is especially helpful. Just google "freezer list" if you need some ideas.

It's Not Just for Food
Stockpile other necessities when you can. If you shop carefully, you will have a nice supply of toothpaste, shampoo, deodorant, etc. that cost you nothing or just pennies. You might already do this on a small scale if you buy enough school supplies to last you the whole school year during the "Back to School" sales. No one likes to pay $2.29 for a notebook in October when they were 10 cents in August.

Other Benefits of a Stockpile
Having a stockpile on hand during a snow storm, illness, or even a layoff can give you real peace of mind. It is quite easy to help others by donating. It saves time, fewer quick runs to the store. You can always make something from what you have on hand.

Below is a picture of some of my stockpile. I didn't pay full price for any of these items and some I got for free:

In addition to getting free products, lots of freebies come with a high value coupon. All sorts of companies/brands mail free stuff right to your door. My mail lady has even stopped to ask me how I am able to get all these things free!

Erica posted last week about all the freebies she got. She inspired me to take picture of my freebies from just last week:
Kraft Sampler box, free razor, lots of coupons-including
some for free full size items, Pull-Up samples, tea bags,
$5 Los Banditos gift certificate, Kotex samples

To get most freebies you only have to fill out a form with your name and address. That's it. Super simple. [I do recommend you set up and use a junk email address for this because companies love to send you email!] To save time when signing up for freebies, I let technology do the work.

The link to Freebies 4 Mom has been in the sidebar for a long time and I know a lot of you probably already take advantage of free offers (especially on Facebook) but I thought I'd mention it again since we have lots of new readers. Everyone should get excited about opening the mail box each day!

Clearance Shoes

If you need shoes for little ones you might want to stop by Wal-mart in West DePere in the next couple days. They had a decent selection of kids shoes on clearance for $5 and $2. Lots more girls styles than boys. They are not in the shoe department, they are in the middle of the store in a couple rows of clearance items (probably due to the remodeling). We ended up getting 6 pairs of shoes for $15!

Another $3 Huggies Coupon

Huggies released another $3 Huggies printable coupon on Facebook and you don't even have to be a fan to print it!

ALL YOU Grocery Challenge?

ALL YOU wants to "challenge" you to spend only $25 per person per week on groceries. They ran this contest last year but I never saw who won or what they spent. Do you think you could do it? Would that be a challenge for you? Do you even keep track of what you spend?

Just for fun I thought I'd pull up my grocery spending (we track ALL of our spending using Quicken). The hardest part was figuring what number week it was! :) [It's the 19th week of the year in case you were wondering.] So far this year my average grocery spending per week has been $95 per week for a family of mostly 7 (sometimes 8--we have a college student). That's under $14 per person per week! And I don't even feel like I'm trying very hard... I know I could do even better. In fact, I was happy to see I am doing better than last year. My average for last year was $129 per week ($16 per person since we had 8 most of the year).

Why am I telling you all this? I want to be an encouragement to you... YOU can spend less on groceries and even if you are already saving YOU can save more!

Festival Coupon: 2 lbs. Bananas FREE

Found this coupon for 2 lbs. of bananas FREE (with $5 purchase) on the GB Press Gazette site when I was looking for something else. Too bad I already went to Festival this week!

Great Pig Deal!!

I just got back from a quick Piggly Wiggly run and just wanted to point out what a great deal you can get this week! It's a perfect deal for those of you just starting out who don't have a large pile of coupons yet because it uses all printable coupons.

First, go and print TWO of each of the following coupons:

$.60/2 Skippy printable coupon here
$.50/1 Wishbone or Western printable here (must register)
$.75/2 I Can't Believe It's Not Butter printable here

In order to print two you just hit the back button a couple times. If you have never printed online coupons before you'll have to download and install a coupon printing program (just follow the on screen directions). Have your printer ready to go with paper and turned on before you hit print.

Then head to Pig and get the following as part of their $1 Mix and Match Sale (you must buy 10 items):

FOUR -- Skippy Peanut Butter
TWO -- Wishbone or Western Dressing
FOUR -- I Can't Believe It's Not Butter
TOTAL = $10
- $3.70 in coupons
FINAL TOTAL = $6.30 or $.63 each!

If you don't need that much "butter spread" at the moment, it freezes well or you could go in with a friend or family member.

Fruit Deals at Aldi

Just wanted to let you know about a couple good fruit deals there this week (at the East side store anyway):
  • Strawberries (1 lb. containers) $.99
  • Fresh pineapple $.99
Look for a post about Aldi soon. (Did you know they are owned by the same company as Trader Joe's?). If you've never shopped there you might want to give it a try.

5/12 Copps Run

Sorry for not posting a list this week. I had a long list of possible scenarios and wasn't sure if I'd end up w/ one or two transactions. A lot depended on certain items being in stock. I ended up w/ only one transaction and did better than I expected, especially since I spent a good hour wandering aimlessly around the store (NOT how I like to shop). My total for everything below was $14.43 and I saved $35.45 (71%)!

Here's the list:

  • Roundy's apple juice, 1.99
  • Roundy's mac n' cheese, 2/$1
  • Kraft Cheddar Explosion, 0.58 - FREE MC from facebook (cashier rang it at full price 1.25!!) = 0.67 overage!
  • 4 Ronzoni Healthy Harvest, 0.98 each - (2) 1.00 off 2 IP's (doubled) = 4 FREE plus 0.08 overage
  • 2 Ronzoni Smart Taste, 0.98 each - (2) 0.75 IP's = 0.23 each
  • Ken's dressing, 1.69 - $1 MC (doubled) = FREE plus 0.31 overage
  • Pop Tarts, 2.50
  • Hershey Bars, 4/1.88 - BOGO Special Dark bar MC (rang up at full price of 0.78) = 4/1.10
  • Armour breakfast sausage, 0.87 w/ in ad coupon
  • 2 milk, 2.19 each
  • Activia, 2.00 - 1.00 IP (doubled) = FREE
  • GoGurt, BOGO 2.69 - 0.80 IP (doubled) = 2/1.09
  • Nivea women's body wash, $4.79 (20% off) - $4 MC = 0.79
  • Nivea men's 3 in 1, $3.03 (20% off) - $3 MC = 0.03

I missed last week's Walgreens and CVS deals on the Nivea body wash, so I was hoping for a good price at Copps. Initially it appeared they were sold out as the regular shelf was empty, but I did find some on an end cap that was not marked w/ the 20% off sign. I took them over to the other shelf to match UPC codes to make sure they were part of the sale and they were! Check out Minnesota Coupon Adventure for all the IP links. Have fun doubling today AND Saturday!!

Sure Rebate Money Maker

Did you get some Sure deodorant free last week at Walgreens? If so, check to see if yours had a "Try Me Free" sticker on it. The rebate is available here, but you need the sticker from the product to validate the rebate form.

Even if you didn't get the deodorant free this can still be a money maker deal if you use the $1.50 off coupons from the 5/2 Smart Source. Just buy one of the "Try Me Free" deodorants at the store (Walgreens on GV has them, I'm sure other places do as well). With the $1.50 off coupon and the rebate... it becomes a money maker even after postage! The rebate doesn't expire until December 15, 2010 so you have plenty of time.

  • You can use (stack) a manufacturer coupon with a store coupon.
Green Sheet Coupons:
Unless otherwise stated "Green Sheet" coupons are unlimited store coupons and can be used with manufacturer's coupons. Only one coupon is necessary and will take off the amount for each coupon item you purchase.

Newspaper Coupons:
Most Festvial coupons in the newspaper are store coupons and can be used with manufacturer's coupons to "double" your savings. You no longer have to cut out the Festival newspaper coupons. Just stop by the service desk and pick up one of the flyers that have the store coupons (not the green sheet, that's separate) on them or hand them the whole newspaper ad. The cashier just has to enter one code for all the coupons and you don't have to cut them out. It's a win-win time saver for you and the cashier!
