Copps/Pick N' Save/Rainbow Coupon Match Ups
Hi Ladies,
Jill just emailed me asking about MinnesotaCouponAdventure's Copps list as it wasn't posted yet this week, so I wanted to give you all an update. Karen at MCA recently moved to a brand new site called Creative Couponing. http://creativecouponing.com/ Be sure to bookmark her new site so you can keep up w/ the deals at Copps/Pick N' Save/Rainbow. I apologize for not posting lists here any more. When school started, my schedule got a LOT busier and I just don't have time these days. But, I still rely on Karen to provide me with those great deal match ups each week. She seems to be branching out a lot more w/ her new site, so it makes for another great all-around money saving resource. Happy shopping Savers!!

Cetirizine (Zyrtec) Deal at CVS
If any of you out there are allergy sufferers like me and rely on Zyrtec to control your symptoms, I stumbled on a good deal at CVS today. The coupon machine printed a $2 CVS Cetirizine coupon and when I went to the shelf, they had the 30 ct. package on sale for $13.99, which is decent in itself, but they were well stocked w/ 100% more FREE bottles, so you get 60/bottle! Also, there is an ECB ($1) printing for these, which I didn't even know about. So, when all is said & done you can get 60ct. for $10.99 after coupon and ECB's. This was at the Howard location on Velp.
NOTE: Watch the register! This did ring up incorrectly for me. The computer recognized it as a 60ct. bottle and rang up at $17.99, instead of the 30ct. price of $13.99, but the cashier was happy to fix it!

Do Coupons Really Help You Save?
This is from an email discussion and thought it was worth sharing! Basically, someone had seen the Extreme Couponing show and wondered if using coupons was really worth it. One of the ladies in the discussion (not me!) wrote this great email in response (bold is my emphasis):
In November, being a complete novice, I saved $650 (of our usual $1000 grocery budget) and we had much, much more food on hand than ever before. Even with the purchase of a coupon binder and the time spent to learn the systems, I probably spent $100 on the binder, plastic pages, and newspapers, and maybe 10 hours learning how to do it all and setting up the binder. An excellent investment on month one for me, and an immediate payoff as well. Now I have my binder and my knowledge and I am doing very well with the couponing and I just buy 2 papers per week, so no more out of pocket expenses.
Before coupons I almost exclusively shopped at Walmart and bought a lot of store brand items. Now I shop at the grocery store, Walgreens, and CVS, and get tons of name brand items and things that previously would have been more of a luxury purchase for us, for way, way less than I ever paid for store brand items. When I walk through Walmart now, the prices make me cringe because I know how much higher they are than what I can get the items for.
Be sure to read the rest...

I think the TLC show on extreme couponing got many people talking about coupons, both positive and negative. For me, I have made several failed attempts at couponing over the years, but in the beginning of November I decided to take another stab at it when I saw that the many couponing sites have done almost all of the legwork for me. Much, much easier than in past years! In November, being a complete novice, I saved $650 (of our usual $1000 grocery budget) and we had much, much more food on hand than ever before. $40 CSN Stores Giveaway
THIS GIVEAWAY HAS ENDED!
It's the middle of the week. Blah. It's the middle of a typical Wisconsin winter. Blah again. Would a giveaway cheer you up?? Yes? Well, then let's have one!
Now that the holidays are over maybe you're looking for a laptop messenger bag for your new toy or maybe you resolved to get your house in order this year and could use some storage and organization items.
CSN Stores is offering one GB Savers reader a $40 gift code! You can use it to purchase anything they sell. And they sell a lot! CSN Stores site has over 200 online stores and sells just about everything. I have placed two orders through CSN in recent months and have been pleased with both the products and the service I received.
If I was going to spend $40 at CSN today, this is what I would splurge on:
We had a sled very similar to this and after many years of hard use by five little boys it finally broke. Feel free to leave a comment about what you would get if you win. It's fun to see what everyone would choose!
The giveaway starts NOW and ends at 10pm on Friday, January 28th. Giveaway is open only to residents of the US and Canada. The winner will be notified by email and will need to respond within 48 hours or a new winner will be chosen.
To enter just type your name and email address in the form below. It's not required, but if you aren't already, please consider becoming a subscriber of GB Savers by email, RSS reader, or Facebook. Sweet CVS Deal
I was just at CVS on Mason and Military and they have a bunch of their Aveeno hair care items marked down 75% off!! Most of them were under $2. Combine that super deal with the $1.50/1 coupon from coupons.com and you've got yourself a sweet deal. But to make it EVEN SWEETER, buy 3 and submit the receipt for the free Aveeno full-size lotion rebate that was recently available. I just checked coupons.com and I'm not seeing the coupon any more, but even if you pay $6 for 3 Aveeno items and then submit it for the rebate it's a pretty great deal! I'd head over there pretty quick, I'm sure these will get scooped up.
Also, they have Kelloggs cereal 3/$10 with a $4 ECB. I bought 4 and used 2 Special K BOGO coupons. After coupons and ECBs I only paid $2 for 4 boxes of Special K. I don't know about you, but I'm set on cereal for about 3 years!!

ALL YOU Subsciption for Under $10
There is only one magazine I am willing to pay for and that's ALL YOU. Each issue has about as many coupons as a newspaper insert. Their articles aren't too bad either, but I'm in it for the coupons! Just like with regular coupon inserts, some months are better than others.
Today if you order through Ebates you can get a 51% back when you subscribe to ALL YOU through Magazines.com. This would make the net price $9.79 which is a great deal for ALL YOU!
Thanks to GB Savers reader Candy who emailed me about this deal!

Menards 20% off Food
In addition to the Copps Coupon booklet today's paper had a little surprise from Menards. It's a brown paper bag from Menard's which you can fill with anything you can eat or drink. Suggested items include candy, pop, bottled water, beef jerky, nuts, chips, soups, sauces and more. You will get 20% off anything in the bag, limited to stock on hand. When it's gone, it's gone. This is good through Sunday, January 23.
I am not sure if the sale is still available but last week Menards had Jack's pizza on sale 6 for $10 (or $1.67 each) which beats most grocery store prices. If you could fill your bag with pizza that wouldn't be a bad deal. I don't usually think of Menards as a place to buy food but apparently it looks like they want you to keep them in mind. Menards does take manufacturer's coupons too. More info about shopping at Menards can be found under the "Stores" tab at the top of the page.
Special thanks to Dolly for passing this along!

I have comments open to everyone (meaning you do NOT have to have an account of any kind to leave a comment). I think all readers, even those without a blog or special account, should be able to leave comments.
At this time I do not moderate comments. Which means that your comment will appear right after you submit it. This also means that I usually won't see your comment until I check my email. I do get an email when someone leaves a comment and if a question is asked I do try and answer it. You can choose to receive comment notification as well if you want to be notified when someone else comments after you (only available for Google accounts) or you can just come back and check for follow up comments later.
Everyone knows how to comment on Facebook-- unfortunately FB doesn't notify me when you comment there, so sorry if you ever felt ignored-- but it has come to my attention that some of you may not know how to leave a comment here on the blog. Here is a little tutorial for you. It's really easy!
At the bottom of every post, look for this (the number changes depending on the number of comments) and then click on it:
It will open a page that includes a box like this:
Just type what you want to say in the box. Under the orange words "Choose an identity", pick one of the four options. If you have a Google account you can use the first option. If you have an Open ID account choose the second option. You can also just pick the Name/URL option and put your name or nickname in the "name" space (filling the URL box is optional). If you wish to remain anonymous just click the last option.
If you have a Google account, you can choose to be notified of follow up comments by marking the box below "Google Account" that says "Email follow up comments to ____@gmail.com".
Right now I have word verification on (so you have to type in a squiggly word) to prove you are not a spam bot. I know it's a pain and adds an additional step; however, most spam comments have similar content to email spam and include links to very offensive content.
The last step is to hit the orange "Publish Your Comment" button and your comment will be visible right away.
See.. it really is super easy! So feel free to speak up and leave a comment!

Reminder: Click for Cans
Campbell's Click for Cans is almost over. So take a minute to vote each day for your favorite team.
Each team gets 1,000 cans of soup, but division champs get an additional 12,000. The winner gets 5,000 more for a total of 18,000 cans. The Packers have won this for the past 8 years! That's a LOT of soup for our local food banks! No matter how the Pack plays we can always win this "Souper Bowl".
Savings Tracker Download
Just in case you missed it a couple weeks ago, Money Saving Mom shared a link to this great savings tracker. I downloaded it (to my Google Docs) and put in all my January receipts. I think it's going to be a great way to keep track of my grocery and personal care spending. Besides telling me how much of my budget I've used up for the month, it will tell me how much I've saved.
My favorite part is the breakdown of savings by both coupons and store discounts. So far this month I've saved $182.65 by using coupons and more than $200 by shopping sales. Of course, it's not really true "savings" since I would never buy some of those items at their regular prices, but the point is even if you aren't a big coupon clipper you can still save a ton by shopping sales.
If you haven't already checked it out, head over to The Coupon Project to download the Savings Tracker. It's completely free. You can even download a short manual to help you figure out how to use it.

Festival Foods Deals 1/16 - 1/22
A few good coupon items but an otherwise pretty slow week at Festival.
Take a few minutes to tell Festival what you think about their weekly ad by taking the survey that can be found on their website. Personally, I mentioned it would be nice to have one larger ad flyer (like most other stores) as opposed to sales being spread out over their weekly ad, internet ad, green sheet, pink sheet, yellow sheet, etc. To put these deal lists together I have to look in a million different places. I almost never mention their health & beauty deals because they are on a separate flier in the store that I rarely even look at.

Piggly Wiggly Update
After some confusion (the online ad doesn't list it as such), I confirmed that Larry's Piggly Wiggly has ground beef on sale for $1.79 per pound when you buy a 10 pound package. The updated Piggly Wiggly deal list can be found here. I hope you have room in your freezers because these are the BEST prices on ground beef and boneless, skinless chicken breasts I've seen in YEARS!
Subscription Options
We have several new readers so I wanted to remind everyone there are several ways to keep up with posts from GB Savers:
- "Like" GB Savers on Facebook! This is great option if you are on Facebook a lot anyway. Occasionally, I post time sensitive deals only on Facebook because it's the fastest way to get the info out for you to see. All blog posts are sent automatically to the GB Savers Facebook feed, but you might miss a deal if you don't see it on your news feed so you might want to...
- Subscribe to GB Savers via email. This is your best option if you want to make sure you don't miss any posts. Every evening one email is sent out that includes the posts from that day. You will not get any spam. Signing up is very easy. Just enter your email address and then be sure to click the link in the confirmation email. If you don't confirm your subscription you will not receive any emails. You can unsubscribe at any time; there is an "unsubscribe" option at the bottom of every email.
- Subscribe via RSS Feed Reader. This is my personal favorite. I love keeping up with all kinds of blogs with an RSS reader. If you don't know about using an RSS reader, you can learn more about them here. Subscribing via RSS is easy, just click the orange (or blue) RSS symbol at the top of the blog or in either sidebar.

The USDA Numbers
Just for fun every once in awhile I like to go look at what the government says we should be spending on groceries. It's always good for a chuckle. The first time I ever saw these numbers was in my favorite money saving book ever The Tightwad Gazette.
The USDA puts out these numbers several times a year. The most recent chart is for November 2010. All levels supposedly represent a "nutritious diet". There are four levels: thrifty, low-cost, moderate, and liberal. They break down into both weekly and monthly costs.
The USDA puts out these numbers several times a year. The most recent chart is for November 2010. All levels supposedly represent a "nutritious diet". There are four levels: thrifty, low-cost, moderate, and liberal. They break down into both weekly and monthly costs.
If you have a family of four, your numbers are listed right on the chart. If you have a larger family you will have to do a little math to get your numbers. To calculate overall household food costs, adjust food costs for each person in household (see below) and then add these adjusted numbers.
1-person—add 20 percent to individual amount listed
2-person—add 10 percent to individual amount listed
3-person—add 5 percent to individual amount listed
4-person—no adjustment (your cost is listed in chart)
5- or 6-person—subtract 5 percent to individual amount listed
7- (or more) person—subtract 10 percent to individual amount listed
We have a family of 8 so I had to subtract 10 percent from each number in the chart before adding them. The numbers I got for my family were:
Thrifty Plan = $217.10 per week
Liberal Plan = $426.20 per week
I didn't figure out the numbers for the Low-Cost or Moderate plans.
Looking at these numbers it doesn't surprise me at all that we can't balance the national budget! :) My husband and I just reviewed our budget (we like to do that at the beginning of each year) and the actual average amount we spent on groceries for 2010 was $101 per week. That's less than half the "thrifty plan" for our family size. If you want to add in household and personal care items (which we budget separately) it would be $131 per week. I'm sure some of you do even better!!
You can find all the charts on the USDA website here. The chart shown above is a pdf available here. There is a very wide cost range listed on these charts and every family is different, especially if you have any special dietary needs. If you do the math, I'd be curious to know how far off these numbers are for your family. Please leave a comment! Feel free to remain "anonymous" if you want.

Thanks Dawn! :)
I've been in a bit of coupon funk for a couple months now. I've been doing okay at the grocery store, but the deals at CVS and Walgreens have been nothing to write home about... so I just haven't been going. Thankfully, I had enough of a stockpile to get away with that but it's dwindling down now and I really need to get motivated.
I had enough free Excedrin coupons to make $10 at CVS this week so (even though I didn't feel like it) I headed out the door after the kids went to bed tonight. I just quickly glanced at the CVS deal list but didn't really get myself organized.
I always know it's going to be a good night at CVS when my favorite cashier is working but tonight I also met an AWESOME fellow couponer! Who not only was fun to visit with, but also cheerfully handed over not one or two but NINE coupons to help make a few deals sweeter for me. I told her about GB Savers so I hope she stops by to say hi and sees this...

THANK YOU DAWN!! I smiled the whole way home. Not only did you make my night by sharing your coupons you really gave me a little inspiration to get back into the swing of things and I really needed that!

Mega Swag Bucks Friday
Just a friendly reminder... it's Mega Swag Bucks day. If you search on Fridays there is a greater chance to earn high value MEGA Swag Bucks.
You can pick up a buck for taking the quick "daily poll" or earn a few by watching a couple videos. I haven't tried it yet but you can now print coupons from Swag Bucks too.
If you haven't already joined Swag Bucks... it's an easy way to "earn" gift cards and prizes by searching the internet. It really does add up... I traded my Swag Bucks in for $200 in Amazon gift cards last year. (Really helped stretch the Christmas budget!)

We're at War!
Fall in troops! Okay, GB Savers, I know I'm probably preaching to the choir here, but I need to remind you all of something. Let's run through a few drills to freshen your money saving skills. There is a war going on all around you. You're on the front lines! The stores want your money and you want to keep it. Right? I sure hope so!
Yesterday, Festival announced that they had to remove their Money Board coupon machines because the company that runs them is going out of business. It's really NOT a big deal. Sure, they were nice to use when a deal matched up but they weren't saving me major money on a regular basis so I won't really miss them too much. [Plus there was other happy coupon news to celebrate: Copps extended Double Daze and ShopKo now takes internet printables!]
But because I would love to see more double coupons in the Green Bay area, I left a comment on Festival's Facebook post and suggested they offer double coupons. :) A girl can dream, can't she? I've suggested it before and their answer is always the same... "it wouldn't save you any money because we'd have to raise our prices" (I totally disagree with their reasoning--How much does the Tot Spot cost, anyway?--but that's not the subject of this post).
I am not at all shocked by Festival's not wanting to offer double coupons. What really shocked me is the number of people more loyal to a grocery store than to saving their own, hard earned money! I realize some of the commenters were just there to stir up trouble and at least one was a Festival employee so we can ignore most of those comments. I can't believe that there is even one person out there who genuinely thinks that Festival's main goal is great customer service or who feels strongly enough to defend any store! I agree they are one of the friendliest, cleanest stores around, but their goal is to make money and mine is to keep it, so that makes us "enemies".
To save the most on your grocery bill you have to "play the game". It requires you to:
So assemble your arsenal (of coupons and deal match-ups) and get out there and save your money! And while you are out there... see if you can win a few new recruits over to our side of the battle!
DIS-missed!

To save the most on your grocery bill you have to "play the game". It requires you to:
- shop at more than one store. No ONE STORE will save you the most!
- drive around town a little bit. Yes, it is worth the cost of gas! We're talking saving hundreds or thousands of dollars per year NOT fifty cents.
- research store policies and weekly ads. That's where GB Savers comes in!
- use coupons strategically to help you save. GB Savers can help you with this too!
- know how much you are spending and how much things really cost.
- not be loyal to any one brand or store.
- teach others! Spread the word. Educate your friends!
So assemble your arsenal (of coupons and deal match-ups) and get out there and save your money! And while you are out there... see if you can win a few new recruits over to our side of the battle!

Bad News from Festival
Bad news from Festival (via their Facebook wall) this morning:
I'm hoping Festival comes up with a new way to help us save as the Money Board was one way they helped us to "double" our savings. Come on Festival... here's your chance... let's try double coupons! :)
Be sure to read the comments on this post! Then maybe take a minute and tell Festival what would make you a happy customer.
"I wanted to give everyone a heads up that the Money Board coupon machines have been removed from all of our stores. The vendor and owner of our Money Board coupon dispenser has decided to cease operations. Thank you!"
