Free Christmas Devotional

If you are looking for a wonderful way to make Christmas meaningful I highly recommend a Jesse Tree. Our family has been doing this for several years now and we love it!

You can download a free Jesse Tree Advent Devotion when you subscribe via email or RSS to Ann Voscamp's blog (which is wonderful by the way!). The download includes readings for each day as well as printable ornaments.

Our Family's Jesse tree
(from a couple years ago)

What is a Jesse Tree?

It's simply a Christmas countdown. You can start with Advent (first Sunday of Advent was yesterday) or you can just start on December 1st. Each day read a short Bible passage and devotional then hang an ornament. There are many websites out there to give you ideas and there is no "right" way. Each family does it a bit differently.

There are "kits" you can buy, but it is easy to just make your own. The ornaments can be printed (like from the download above) or if you get real creative you can buy items to hang as ornaments that are a bit more three dimensional (like a mini-globe, twine, etc.). The tree itself can be a branch that is secured in a pot or you can use a mini-Christmas tree. That is what we do and it works well. Some people just put the Jesse tree ornaments on their regular Christmas tree.

Ordering Gifts Online?

If you plan to do any shopping online this holiday season here are a few must have sites to help you save some money...

RetailMeNot--before you order from any website at least just stop by this site and put the retailer site name in their search box. You will find all sorts of coupon codes for everything from a % off to free shipping. (They also have printable coupons and deals on gift certificates from Restaurant.com)

Amazon's Free Super Saver Shipping--Amazon carries just about every product under the sun and has great deals. If you haven't already, be sure to sign up for Amazon Mom (not just for moms!) program and to get a free three-month Prime membership. Prime membership gets you free 2-day shipping with no minimum! If you don't have a Prime membership most items ship free when your order is over $25. Some items that don't qualify so keep an eye out. If you need to get to that magical $25 mark and don't know what to get head over to this site to see what filler items you can get for your remaining amount.

Swagbucks, MyPoints, or Ebates--all of these sites give you a little "rebate" back when you order online. They all have a huge list of online retailers. MyPoints gives you "points" which you can turn into gift cards. Ebates gives you cash back. Swagbucks earns you SwagBucks which you can use to purchase items for gift cards. You can combine the money back rebate programs with coupon codes (see above) and sales to get the best deal possible.

Red Gold Tomatoes Giveaway

I was contacted by Red Gold Tomatoes last week to see if I was interested in giving their products a try. I'm always up for an adventure, especially if it involves food! So I said yes and received this nice package in the mail.

Included in the package was a great little cookbook. Besides being full of delicious and easy to prepare recipes, it includes helpful tips and facts. My two favorites? A "sell by" date only indicates when a product should be removed from a store shelf, it doesn't mean the food is spoiled after that date (drives me crazy when people say that isn't true) AND, get this... the U.S. Supreme Court made a ruling in 1893 that tomatoes are a vegetable! (To get more taxes, of course!)

Red Gold Tomatoes is a family owned (three generations strong) and operated company. They grow their tomatoes right here in the Midwest within a 100 mile radius of their processing facility. Red Gold makes more than canned tomatoes too. Their website is full of recipes and has a helpful meal planner too.

I tried the petite dice tomatoes and petite diced tomatoes with garlic & olive oil tonight when I made this southwestern-style Chicken and Dumplings recipe for dinner. It was delicious! Now it's your turn to give Red Gold Tomatoes a try! You can win the very same package I received! Included are: 4 cans of Red Gold Tomatoes products, Red Gold ketchup, a reusable grocery sack, magnet, key chain, tomato soup recipe cards, and a cookbook (Heartwarming Recipes for the Busy Cook).

The giveaway starts NOW and ends Sunday at 10pm. Winner will be notified by email and will need to provide their mailing address in order to receive their prize. To enter just fill out the short form below. Earn an extra entry for every person YOU get to "like" GB Savers! Tell your friend (or friends!) to "like" GB Savers on Facebook and when they enter have them put YOUR name in the box on the entry form. Every time your name shows up you get an extra entry!

Note: I was not compensated for this post and it contains my honest opinion. I did, however, get this Red Gold package and one to give away at no cost.

CVS Black Friday Deals

In case you are interested, MoneySavingMom posted a list of CVS Black Friday deals. LOTS of free items!! You might want to print off a few coupons and get ready now. A quick morning run to CVS before heading to grandma's for Thanksgiving dinner has become a tradition at our house.

Have you noticed the CVS deal posts have been missing here on GB Savers for a couple months? Time for a little confession: The deals have been so slow that I haven't been to CVS since August.

Thanks to a very full stockpile I haven't bought one tube of toothpaste or bottle of shampoo in the mean time. Every once in awhile it's nice to take a break from the deals! However, my stockpile is starting to dwindle and I've recently earned a few CVS gift cards... so be on the look out for CVS deal lists again soon.

Stock Up Watch: November

Can you believe it's November already?! Just a quick heads up if this if your first deal seeking fall... stock up! When you see a great deal take advantage of it. There will lots of great money saving opportunities coming up in the next couple months.

If you shop deals now you should be able to stock up on enough flour, sugar, canned veggies, canned soups, and various other baking supplies to last you several months and maybe even until next year at this time. If you find a great deal on something that only goes on sale in the fall, do the math (how much is a year's supply for your family?) and then stock up now when it's on sale! Even if you don't ever clip a single coupon this will save you a TON of money.

Do that for each deal you come across and you'll soon find you are spending much less at the grocery store. Or better yet, you might find you don't have to go to the store for a week or two at all! Click here to read more about the basics of stockpiling.

In addition to great grocery store savings November and December will offer deals on toys and various other electronics like TVs, camcorders, GPS units, and other small electronic items. Keep an eye on the ads if you are looking for any of these items!

Speaking of stockpiling... here is a great (and very cheap) way to organize and store your canned goods.
